chapter 14,15,16,17 Mood Swings

For the 4 chapters I'm going to discus Holden's rapid mood swings. During my reading of the four chapters in the book. I have discovered a great amount of signs of rapid mood swings. For example, on chapter 14 Holden was sad and crying due to the reason of Maurice punching him in the stomach and Sunny grabbing $5 out of Holden's wallet. After Maurice and Sunny left Holden stayed for a bit then instantly turned insane and wanted to kill every one with a assault rifle. Another example is on chapter 17 when Holden is horse playing with Sally in the taxi cab and is all in love. Then when there almost done ice skating Holden randomly becomes a meanie and tells Sally that she is a "royal pain in the ass" (72). Given this information, I believe that Holden suffers from bipolar disorder. See the link below for more information.

"All of a sudden I started to cry" (56) "But I'm crazy. I swear to God I am. About halfway to the bathroom, I sort of started pretending I had a bullet in my guts. Old 'Maurice had plugged me. Now I was on the way to the bathroom to get a good shot of bourbon or something to steady my nerves and help me really go into action. I pictured myself coming out of the goddam bathroom, dressed and all, with my automatic in my pocket, and  staggering around a little bit. Then I'd walk downstairs, instead of using the elevator. I'd hold onto the banister and all, with this blood trickling out of the side of my mouth a little at a time. What  I'd do, I'd walk down a few floors--holding onto my guts, blood leaking all over the place-- and then I'd ring the elevator bell. As soon as old Maurice opened the doors, he'd see me with the automatic in my hand and he'd start screaming at me, in this very high-pitched, yellow-belly voice, to leave him alone. But I'd plug him anyway. Six shots right through his fat hairy belly" (56). That's another example of how Holden is bipolar.

  1. Yikes. I would definitely say Holden has some sort of problem going on (mentally), similar to bipolar disorder, but not the same. If you scroll further down the connection you posted, the paragraph on Rapid Cycling suggests that maybe Holden is developing this disorder; that he may not have had it before some event (Allie's death? Leaving Pencey?)
What did you think about his people watching at the beginning of Chapter 17?

  2. Well he is just bored and doesn't have anything to do, So he watches and says stuff about other people to himself just to do something. I agree with you that his disorder probably did develop due to a strong event that happened to him.

  3. Claire pretty much said what I was thinking. What do you think about his interaction with the nun? Could that be counted as a mood swing for Holden?

    1. I don't see to much of a mood swing at all when he met the with the two nuns. One part that some people could probably consider him changing his mood is when he says "I think, if I hadn't been sort of afraid, the whole time I was talking to them, that they'd all of sudden try to find out if I was Catholic. Catholics are always trying to find out if you're a Catholic" (112). But honestly it was just him talking to him self and having his own opinions. If he was talking to the nuns and being nice and all then all of sudden change in to a jerk. Then that would be a mood swing that would count.
